Humata Health, a provider of AI-powered medical review technology, has announced its participation in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Electronic Prior Authorization Acceleration initiative as a Friend of the Ecosystem. This initiative aims to enhance the adoption of electronic prior authorization across the healthcare system.
The initiative, launched through the CMS Health Tech Ecosystem, seeks to unite health systems, payers, electronic health record developers, and technology partners. Its goal is to address workflow, technical, and operational challenges that impede the widespread implementation of electronic prior authorization in healthcare. This effort supports regulatory requirements outlined in the CMS Interoperability and Prior Authorization final rule, which mandates API-enabled data exchange, defined decision timeframes, and public reporting of prior authorization metrics by January 1, 2027.
Humata Health’s solution automates the entire prior authorization process, covering authorization requirement checks, retrieval of payer-specific policies, clinical bundling, submission, statusing, and post-authorization monitoring. The company’s AI-powered PolicyMatch technology utilizes natural language processing to align clinical documentation with payer criteria, including medical necessity, step therapy, and diagnosis requirements, before submissions reach a payer.
Implementations at major health systems have demonstrated a 96% first-pass approval rate, an 83% reduction in reschedules, and 35% fewer staff interactions per authorization using the platform.
Jeremy Friese, MD, Founder and CEO of Humata Health, stated that the transition to electronic prior authorization requires a coordinated effort across the entire ecosystem. He emphasized that Humata Health’s technology has already shown the potential of thoughtfully applied AI in clinical review, and the company intends to help ensure that the developing infrastructure delivers on its promise for patients and providers.
Humata Health contributes direct federal implementation experience to this initiative. The company was previously selected by CMS as a technology partner for the WISeR (Wasteful and Inappropriate Service Reduction) Model, which became operational in January 2026. This model represents an advanced real-world deployment of AI-driven clinical review within Medicare.
