OpenAI has acquired investment startup Roi for an undisclosed sum. As part of this transition, Roi’s co-founder and CEO, Sujith Vishwajith, will join the OpenAI team, while Roi is set to wind down its operations this month, with its final day of service scheduled for October 15, 2025. Only Mr. Vishwajith will transition to OpenAI through the acquisition.
Mr. Vishwajith, a former Airbnb software engineer, co-founded Roi with Chip Davis, also formerly of Airbnb, in January 2022. The startup successfully raised $3.6 million in July 2023. This funding round was led by Spark Capital, with additional support from Gradient Ventures, Spacecadet Ventures, and former Coinbase CTO Balaji Srinivasan.
The capital raised was used to develop Roi’s proposition, which included portfolio investment tracking, trading capabilities, and a proprietary chatbot service named Roi AI. This chatbot was designed to provide app users with personalized investment advice.
In a statement announcing the acquisition, Roi detailed its foundational mission: “When we started Roi, our mission was to make investing more accessible by solving one of the hardest problems in finance: personalisation. With Roi AI, we showed what artificial intelligence could unlock by delivering individually tailored insights, education, and guidance in real time.”
Roi’s statement further elaborated on a broader insight gained during its operations: “In the process, we learned something bigger. Personalisation isn’t just the future of finance, it’s the future of software itself. The products we use every day won’t remain static, predetermined experiences. They’ll become adaptive, deeply personal companions that understand us, learn from us, and evolve with us.” This strategic alignment with AI-powered personalization is a key driver behind OpenAI’s acquisition. OpenAI’s valuation recently surpassed $500 billion following a secondary share sale. This acquisition is one of several made by OpenAI this year, including Context.ai, which develops analytics tools for AI model performance; Crossing Minds, creators of AI-powered recommendation engines; and Alex, an AI development assistant for iOS app development.
