Klarna, a global digital bank and flexible payments provider, has launched its new Tap to Pay feature across 14 European markets. This initiative integrates flexible payment options into physical retail at scale, transforming the Klarna app into a contactless wallet for everyday use.

With over 80% of European shopping still taking place in physical stores, Tap to Pay aims to extend the convenience of online shopping to brick-and-mortar environments. The feature utilizes NFC technology, allowing consumers to set up a flexible payment plan and complete transactions by tapping their phone at checkout, all within the Klarna app, without needing to add a card to another wallet or switch applications.

Tap to Pay builds on the global adoption of the debit-first Klarna Card, which is currently used by more than 4 million consumers. The card operates as debit by default, with the option to activate credit functionality within the Klarna app when necessary. It is accepted at over 150 million merchant locations worldwide through Visa Flexible Credential.

David Fock, Chief Product & Design Officer at Klarna, stated, “Tap to Pay brings us closer to our vision of Klarna being everywhere for everything. Now you can set up a flexible payment plan and tap to pay in seconds, all inside the Klarna app. It makes the everyday shopping moments significantly smoother for our Klarna customers across Europe, giving them even more flexibility and choice at checkout.”

To use Tap to Pay, consumers open their Klarna Card in the Klarna app, select Tap to Pay, and then tap their phone at the checkout terminal. Users can choose to use the card in debit mode as default or create a flexible payment plan.

The feature is currently live for Klarna consumers in Germany, Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Finland, Belgium, Austria, Ireland, Portugal, Norway, Poland, Denmark, and Sweden. It is compatible with both iOS and Android devices, with support for the Klarna Credit Card planned for future implementation.

Klarna operates as a global digital bank and flexible payments provider, serving over 114 million active users worldwide and processing 3.4 million transactions daily. Its AI-powered payments and commerce network is designed to empower consumers with smarter payment options. Klarna facilitates payments online, in-store, and via Apple Pay & Google Pay. Over 850,000 retailers, including Uber, H&M, Saks, Sephora, Macy’s, Ikea, Expedia Group, Nike, and Airbnb, use Klarna’s solutions. Klarna is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: KLAR).
