HSBC has agreed to sell its Egyptian retail banking business to Emirates NBD as part of its ongoing simplification strategy. This transaction, anticipated to close in the second half of 2027, follows a strategic review of HSBC Egypt’s retail banking operations and is projected to generate a pre-tax gain of approximately $300 million for HSBC Group.
Under the agreement, HSBC Egypt will transfer its entire retail banking business, including retail loans, deposits, accounts, and the employees supporting these operations, to Emirates NBD Egypt. HSBC has assured that there will be no immediate changes for its Egyptian retail customers, and their current products and services will continue to operate as normal. The bank stated that Egypt remains a crucial market with significant growth potential, and it will continue to support its corporate and institutional banking clients in the country.
The divestment aligns with HSBC Group’s strategy to simplify its operations and concentrate on areas where it possesses a clear competitive advantage and significant growth opportunities. This approach has previously led to the divestment of its retail banking operations in Sri Lanka and Bahrain, as well as the sale of its Singapore life and health insurance business to Germany’s Allianz for €2 billion.
Separately, HSBC is also selling its AUD 36 billion (approximately $25 billion) Australian home loan portfolio to US-based asset manager Blackstone. This acquisition, which will be financed by funds managed by Blackstone Credit & Insurance, Blackstone Tactical Opportunities, and Blackstone Real Estate Debt Strategies, represents the largest home loan portfolio deal globally. Dan Leiter, head of international for Blackstone Credit & Insurance, described the transaction as a “marquee investment” and a testament to the firm’s “conviction in the growing opportunities in credit across Asia,” highlighting international expansion as a “major priority” for their private credit business.
Moving forward, Australian non-bank lender Pepper Money will serve as the loan management partner for the acquired portfolio. In 2023, Pepper Money acquired HSBC’s mortgage portfolio in New Zealand, further solidifying its relationship with the bank’s divestment efforts.
