tea Protocol Launches Token on CoinList to Boost Open-Source Funding and Security

The tea protocol, designed to establish a reward economy for open-source software, has announced the availability of its token on CoinList (coinlist.co/tea). This development represents a step toward fostering a sustainable and secure future for open-source development, particularly within the context of the artificial intelligence (AI) era.

The tea token aims to create an open-source economy where developers receive compensation for their contributions, while also integrating security into the software supply chain. The current software ecosystem is experiencing increased pressure as AI accelerates application creation, with daily app submissions projected to rise from approximately 2,000 to over 100,000. Existing gatekeepers like Google and Apple are not equipped to review this volume while maintaining robust security standards. Simultaneously, open-source developers, who build the foundational code underpinning modern technology, remain underfunded despite cloud giants generating significant revenue from their work.

Timothy Lewis, CEO of pkgx, commented on the initiative, stating, “tea ensures that open-source creators are fairly compensated for the value they provide, while giving end users confidence in the provenance of the software they rely on.” The tea token directly addresses the imbalance by rewarding developers and enhancing the security and transparency of the global software supply chain.

The tea protocol has demonstrated early traction through its testnet phases. The Assam Testnet generated 385 million wallets, followed by Know Your Customer (KYC) verification in later stages. The Sepolia Testnet recorded 177,000 KYC-verified addresses and over 11 million wallets created within an eight-week period. Across all phases, an estimated 1 million-plus real users actively engaged, and developer participation in package reward staking has validated the protocol’s approach.

At launch, open-source developers will be able to earn TEA tokens directly through the platform via several key features. teaRank is a dynamic scoring system designed to reward developers based on the adoption and impact of their work. Cryptographic Payments utilize native GPG signature support to enable direct rewards to developers’ keys without intermediaries. BounTea is an incentive mechanism that allows maintainers to attach TEA rewards to issues and pull requests across various Git environments, including GitHub and GitLab, providing direct incentives for contributors to resolve bugs, add features, and improve code quality.

By linking rewards directly to developer provenance and contributions, tea establishes economic incentives for ongoing innovation and aims to ensure long-term sustainability within the open-source ecosystem. The token launch occurs during a period where clearer regulatory frameworks in the United States are encouraging blockchain innovation. The tea protocol is positioned to benefit from this environment, alongside the expansion of Ethereum-based infrastructure and increasing demand for decentralized application distribution models.

Founded by Max Howell, creator of Homebrew, and Tim Lewis (Ikigai Asset Management, DEVxDAO), tea is developing foundational infrastructure for secure and transparent application distribution in the AI era. Homebrew currently serves over 100 million users and has facilitated billions of installs. The protocol has established a real-time dependency graph mapping the open-source ecosystem, intending to address the issue of unpaid and unrewarded developers whose work powers the digital economy. This mechanism enables open-source creators to monetize their contributions while providing security and transparency for end users.
