Securian Financial Leverages AI for Auto-Substantiated Supplemental Health Claims, Streamlining Payouts

Securian Financial has partnered with Reclaim Health to implement an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered system that automates supplemental health insurance claims, allowing customers to receive benefits with reduced effort.

Reclaim Health, an AI-driven healthcare financial advocacy platform, leverages its algorithms to scan claims submitted to customers’ major medical insurance. This process identifies qualifying supplemental health benefit claims that employees might not have filed, integrating these benefits with existing major medical claims.

In the initial months of this collaboration, Securian Financial has identified hundreds of eligible supplemental health benefit claims across six employer clients offering Securian’s voluntary accident, critical illness, or hospital indemnity insurance products. Over 100 claims have already been paid, with approximately 40 requiring no action from the employees. One employer client saw 39% of its employees opt into the auto-substantiated claims program, resulting in prompt payments for several individuals with minimal personal effort.

Adam Taylor, Securian Financial’s second vice president for Employee Benefits Solutions, stated, “We are excited about the results we’ve seen so far in our work with Reclaim to transform the voluntary supplemental health benefits claims experience for our customers. For the first time, customers may receive benefits without needing to gather extensive documentation on their own—or having to remember to file a claim at all.” Securian estimates that by the end of 2025, 20% of its supplemental health benefits portfolio will utilize Reclaim’s auto-substantiated claims tool, with several benefit administrators already integrating this process into their enrollment experiences for shared clients.

Nataly Youssef, CEO and founder of Reclaim Health, commented, “This collaboration advances our mission to ensure customers receive their maximum entitled financial payouts promptly and with little to no effort on their part.” Supplemental health insurance policies provide a lump sum payment to assist with expenses after a qualifying medical event; however, managing paperwork after an accident, hospital stay, or critical illness diagnosis can be challenging, leading individuals to miss out on entitled financial support. Taylor added, “Auto-substantiated claims can fix the problem of customers failing to seek claims for benefits in which they are entitled, with customers receiving proactive communication whenever they may be eligible for a claim. It’s important to our customers that the claims experience is efficient, and our collaboration with Reclaim really checks that box.”

Securian Financial, headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota, offers supplemental health benefits, including accident, critical illness, and hospital indemnity insurance, to employers nationwide through its subsidiaries, Minnesota Life Insurance Company and Securian Life Insurance Company. The company also holds the position as the nation’s third-largest direct writer of group life insurance as of December 31, 2024.
