Modeshift, a provider of cloud-based, contactless fare collection systems, reported significant growth, product innovation, and award recognition in 2025, expanding its global footprint and enhancing its platform for transit agencies and riders.

In 2025, Modeshift expanded its global presence, deepened rider adoption, and advanced its fare collection platform, aiding transit agencies in modernizing operations and transitioning from fragmented, legacy systems. The company’s 360-degree fare collection platform integrates mobile ticketing, account-based payments, validating fareboxes, TVMs, and real-time data through a single back office. This approach aims to provide agencies with increased operational control and offer riders a consistent payment experience across various channels.

Key achievements for Modeshift in 2025 included expanding its services to nearly 60 transit agencies across the U.

S. and Europe. The platform facilitated over 71 million trips for 4.13 million riders, resulting in 10.8 million digital tickets issued worldwide. The company continued its international growth, supporting fare collection in 18 U.

S. cities, 35 cities in Romania, five cities in Bulgaria, and Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia.

Modeshift also introduced Modern Fareboxes in 2025 to address issues with aging farebox technology, which often incurs high maintenance costs and is incompatible with contemporary payment models. Through a partnership with ITSMAX Solutions, Modeshift launched its validating fareboxes to the U.

S. market. These fareboxes are fully integrated into Modeshift’s cloud-based platform and are designed as part of a modular, software-driven system. The system simplifies hardware by focusing on secure cash handling with fewer moving parts, while validators and mobile ticketing facilitate contactless payments. All payment methods, including fareboxes, validators, and mobile tickets, are managed through one back office. Initial farebox deployments are currently underway with two transit agencies, with full operational status anticipated in 2026.

Throughout 2025, Modeshift rolled out new features designed to enhance both agency management and rider experiences. These included Fare Capping, which automatically ensures riders pay the best available fare, initially deployed with Indiana County Transit Authority. Other features launched were Expanded Ticket Distribution, supporting digital pass sharing for various users; Top-Up Card functionality, allowing online top-ups for NFC cards; Paid Transfers for seamless, cashless travel across routes; and Two-Way Driver–Dispatcher Communication for real-time operational coordination.

The company’s technology and customer successes received industry recognition globally in 2025. Modeshift was awarded two Gold Stevie® Awards for Technological Excellence, securing Company of the Year and Technical Innovation of the Year. The Crawford Area Transportation Authority was recognized for achieving 68% passenger adoption within eight months of launching Modeshift’s system. Skopje, North Macedonia, was acknowledged for modernizing its 600-bus network in three months, replacing 15-year-old legacy technology. Additionally, Modeshift Romania received the Mobility and Urban Transport Award for Digitalization and Smart Payments in Public Transport.

Miroslav Katsarov, CEO of Modeshift, stated, “2025 marked a turning point for Modeshift. Agencies are no longer willing to piece together disconnected systems or rely on aging hardware. By unifying fareboxes, validators, mobile ticketing and features like fare capping into one 360-degree platform, we’re giving transit agencies a modern, flexible path forward—and riders a better experience every time they board.”
