Kion Launches AI-Powered Model Context Protocol and Introduces FinOps+ Enhancements for Unified Multicloud Management

Kion, a leading automated CloudOps and FinOps platform for multicloud environments, has announced the general availability of its Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, designed to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) assistants with Kion environments, alongside the release of version 3.14, which introduces FinOps+ inspired features for enhanced operational visibility and expanded cost management capabilities across public cloud, private cloud, and SaaS.

Kion’s MCP server is engineered to connect AI assistants directly to Kion environments, addressing a growing demand for intelligent decision-making around cloud costs as organizations navigate increasingly complex cloud bills and procurement arrangements. The protocol enables the integration of Kion’s API with AI models such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Anthropic’s Claude, facilitating intelligent access to real-time data and actionable insights that support a range of use cases from compliance reporting to financial analysis.

The MCP retrieves and analyzes data to provide detailed reports on cloud spend across departments, summarize resource utilization, identify user account access, and pinpoint patterns in compliance findings. Beyond data analysis, the protocol also empowers users to delegate common tasks to AI assistants, including creating and editing budgets, allocating funds to cloud resources, or organizing cloud infrastructure.

Randy Shore, Chief Customer Officer at Kion, highlighted the strategic intent behind the new protocol. “Cloud architects and FinOps practitioners are all seeking expert support to navigate powerful data spread across cloud accounts,” Shore stated. “We designed our MCP to serve as an always-available cloud advisor, representing the next capability in our platform that enables customers to scale their cloud footprint with speed and confidence.”

In parallel, Kion has unveiled version 3.14, a release aligned with the FinOps Foundation’s Cloud+ Scope. This update is designed to empower organizations to manage cloud operations more efficiently and accelerate value by consolidating public cloud, private cloud, and SaaS spend into a single source of truth.

Version 3.14 introduces several new features: Custom Accounts normalize non-CSP billing data for unified visibility, attribution, reporting, budgeting, and enforcement; Forecasting 2.0 provides a next-generation engine for highly accurate spend projections with customizable report views; CloudPulse offers an operational dashboard for CloudFormation Templates (CFTs), unifying deployment visibility and status; and Service Categories enable cross-cloud cost reporting by macro categories like Compute, Storage, and Networking for executive reviews and comparisons.

Tatum Tummins, Senior Product Manager at Kion, commented on the significance of the FinOps+ approach. “Recent FinOps Foundation surveys indicate an increasing number of organizations prioritize managing costs beyond just public cloud,” Tummins noted. “Our FinOps+ strategy is proactive and holistic, bridging FinOps with operational excellence by centralizing all cost management, allowing teams to leverage Kion’s capabilities for automated financial and operational policy enforcement at scale.”

The MCP server is open-source and currently available via a GitHub repository. Kion plans to roll out expanded in-app support and additional features throughout the remainder of the calendar year. Current Kion customers can access MCP support now, with compatibility extending back to version 3.12.
