Worldpay Launches AI-Powered Authentication Optimization Service to Boost Payment Approval Rates

Share It:

Worldpay has introduced its patent-pending Authentication Optimization Service, a solution designed to enhance payment approval rates and minimize unnecessary friction for merchants leveraging 3D Secure (3DS) authentication, particularly in markets without mandatory 3DS regulations.\n\nWorldpay’s new service utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) and extensive transaction insights gathered from billions of global payments it processes annually. This AI-powered solution makes real-time decisions on whether to apply 3DS to authenticate a transaction or directly authorize the payment, based on factors such as risk profiles and issuer preferences. This approach moves beyond rigid, rules-based systems by intelligently routing transactions to 3DS authentication only when genuinely necessary for regulatory compliance or when Worldpay’s data indicates a high probability of issuer acceptance, thereby reducing unnecessary friction while upholding security and compliance standards.\n\nCindy Turner, chief product officer at Worldpay, stated, “With the Authentication Optimization Service, we’re using AI and deep transaction insights to help merchants capture more revenue and deliver seamless payments, especially in markets where strong consumer authentication isn’t required. At Worldpay, security and seamlessness aren’t mutually exclusive — they’re critical components in how we optimize every payment. Our scale, data, and technology turn declines into approvals, helping clients win back missed revenue, while reducing the kind of friction at checkout that can lead to abandoned carts.”\n\nThe service has garnered support from industry partners, including Visa. James Mirfin, SVP, head of risk and identity solutions at Visa, commented, “At Visa, we understand the need to ensure both security and seamless payment experiences. We are proud to be a part of Worldpay’s new Authentication Optimization Service, which will help merchants boost approvals while maintaining high levels of security. Data-driven, adaptive approaches like this can help bridge the gap between merchant needs and issuer risk management — delivering better outcomes for everyone in the payments ecosystem.”\n\nEarly results from a two-month pilot study involving a prominent cruise line company, which previously used 3DS on all transactions, demonstrated a 5.5% average improvement in authorization rates. In markets where strong consumer authentication is not required, the pilot observed double-digit improvements. The service aims to improve customer experience by intelligently bypassing authentication steps when not critical for approval, with the goal of reducing customer drop-off and abandoned carts.\n\nThe adaptive, data-driven system continually learns and adjusts to evolving issuer and market behaviors based on insights from billions of transactions. For merchants already utilizing Worldpay’s 3DS Flex, enabling this payments optimization service requires no additional integration or data requirements. Furthermore, it allows merchants to retain the fraud protection benefits of 3DS for fully authenticated transactions while providing frictionless checkout experiences; initial results showed only one chargeback reported in two months for transactions where the service bypassed 3DS.\n\nThe Authentication Optimization Service is patent pending and underscores Worldpay’s ongoing commitment to innovation in payment authentication. As an industry-leading payments technology and solutions company, Worldpay processes over 50 billion transactions annually across 174 countries and 135 currencies, helping businesses manage payments globally.
