The Cumberland Building Society has announced the appointment of Stuart Miller, currently chief commercial officer at Newcastle Building Society, as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective in early 2026.
Miller will succeed Des Moore, who has led The Cumberland since 2018. Under Moore’s leadership, the society undertook significant modernization efforts, including a partnership with Indian technology firm Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). This collaboration led to the implementation of TCS’s cloud-based banking solution, TCS Bancs, in March, replacing its longstanding MSS platform from SBS.
Miller brings nearly four decades of experience in financial services to his new role. His career includes leadership positions such as director of distribution at Monmouthshire Building Society, retail director roles at Virgin Money and Northern Rock, and head of mortgages at RBS International. He joined Newcastle Building Society as CCO nine months ago and also serves as a director at Newcastle Financial Advisors.
The Cumberland highlighted Miller’s prior experience in supporting high streets and rural communities, emphasizing his commitment to maintaining strong traditional branch services. Miller stated, “The high street matters, because it’s where communities connect. When a branch closes in a rural area it’s not just a financial service that disappears, it’s part of the social fabric.”
Founded in 1850 and headquartered in Carlisle, The Cumberland operates 31 branches across Cumbria, Lancashire, Northumberland, and Southwest Scotland. As the UK’s tenth-largest building society, it manages £3.2 billion in total assets and serves 160,000 members with a mortgage portfolio valued at £2.6 billion.
