WEX (NYSE: WEX), a global commerce platform, has introduced a new intelligent claims tool leveraging artificial intelligence to streamline and simplify the reimbursement process for flexible spending accounts (FSAs). The tool is designed to assist HR teams by ensuring documentation is complete, accurate, and verifiable at the point of submission.
During the claims process, the AI-powered tool demonstrated over 97% precision in determining the correct reimbursement amount for valid claims. It automates several steps, including checking receipts, pre-filling claim forms, and quickly approving eligible claims for reimbursement. This automation is intended to reduce manual work and accelerate the approval of eligible claims from days to minutes. Jennifer Whitmire, Senior Vice President of Product for Health and Benefits at WEX, stated that building smarter tools to automate frustrating processes helps partners offer a faster, more modern experience without increasing team burden.
The new capabilities aim to make the claims experience more efficient and reliable. These features include real-time document verification, which alerts users to missing information; smart form completion that pre-fills key fields to minimize manual errors; and fast claim assessment, allowing eligible documents for claims reimbursement to be approved rapidly. The tool addresses common reasons for claim denials, such as incomplete documentation or ineligible expenses, providing users with a more predictable process. Specific benefits include payouts that can process in under two minutes, improved accuracy, reduced administrative tasks for HR teams, and increased employee confidence through immediate feedback.
Built with a focus on security and scalability, this launch is part of WEX’s broader investment in advanced tools. It operates on a secure data infrastructure with strong governance practices, meeting HIPAA standards and adhering to strict protocols for personal data protection. Whitmire added that WEX’s investments in data-driven and AI-powered innovation prioritize long-term value, aiming to save time, reduce friction, and simplify the experience for users.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 72% of state and local government workers and 47% of private-sector employees had access to FSAs in 2024. With increasing usage, WEX’s new claims tool is available to HR administrators, their brokers, and consultants seeking to enhance their FSA reimbursement process.
