WEX (NYSE: WEX), a global commerce platform, has launched the WEX Fleet card now with EV payment capabilities, offering fleet customers a unified payment solution for both traditional fuel and public electric vehicle charging within a single card, account, and invoice across its proprietary closed-loop fuel network. The company states it is the first fuel card provider to integrate these payment functionalities into a single solution.
The new WEX Fleet card addresses the challenges faced by fleets operating a mix of electric and fuel-powered vehicles, which often encounter fragmented payment systems, multiple cards or applications, and complex reconciliation processes. This offering aims to streamline these operations by consolidating all data and payments into one secure system.
Drivers can utilize the card at over 175,000 WEX-accepting public charging ports and more than 90% of U.
S. gas stations that accept WEX cards. Fleet managers retain unified reporting, purchase controls accessible via the DriverDash app, and a single credit line for all transaction data related to both fueling and charging activities.
Carlos Carriedo, Chief Operating Officer for Americas Payments & Mobility at WEX, stated, “Our customers want one solution that works everywhere, and that’s exactly what we’re delivering with EV payments built directly into this new WEX Fleet card. It’s simplicity at scale for mixed-energy operations.”
The upgraded card integrates RFID technology, enabling tap-to-charge functionality directly into the standard WEX Fleet card. This eliminates the need for separate EV charging cards or mobile applications to initiate and pay for charging sessions, supporting internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, hybrids, and EVs with a unified card and account structure.
Operating on WEX’s proprietary closed-loop fleet network, rather than open-loop general-purpose card networks, the system provides end-to-end control over transactions. This architecture facilitates richer data collection, enhanced security, and fleet-specific purchase controls, supporting vehicle electrification without disrupting existing fueling workflows.
Key benefits include a single card, account, and invoice for fuel and EV charging; embedded tap-to-charge capability; consolidated reporting and controls; and straightforward activation options for existing or new cards. This initiative aligns with WEX’s broader efforts, including its En Route EV suite, to simplify operations and support the evolving needs of mixed-energy fleets.
The WEX Fleet card now with EV payment capabilities is currently available for eligible fleet customers. Existing EV-enabled customers can request updated cards through the WEX online customer portal or will receive them during their next regular card-renewal cycle.
