Sysdig has announced the launch of the Sysdig Open Source Community, a new global hub designed to connect and support users of its open source tools, including Falco, Wireshark, Stratoshark, and sysdig OSS, while also offering professional development and career opportunities. The Sysdig Open Source Community aims to unify the worldwide ecosystem of security professionals, developers, engineers, analysts, and students. Beyond fostering technical collaboration among users, the community will provide resources for professional growth, such as certification programs, job and freelance boards, mentorship pairing, and a dedicated student support center. The establishment of this unified community builds on Sysdig’s ongoing commitment to open source development and responds to the growing need for a centralized platform for security practitioners. The January 2025 launch of Stratoshark, which extends Wireshark’s network visibility to the cloud by integrating Falco’s ecosystem, highlighted the convergence of these tools and their substantial user bases. Wireshark currently has over 5 million daily users with expertise in network analysis, while Falco, a Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF)-graduated project, has more than 4 million users and over 1,000 contributors specializing in cloud threat detection. The Sysdig Open Source Community seeks to bridge existing silos among users across the Sysdig open source software (OSS) ecosystem, creating a central global hub for security professionals.Edgaras Apšega, a Site Reliability Engineer at Vinted and a Falco user, noted the community’s value: “To me, the Sysdig Open Source Community creates a vital feedback loop – a place where I can see how others are adapting to new threats, learn about new tools, and share best practices with professionals across the globe. Falco has given me the flexibility to tailor threat detection to my organization’s needs, but staying ahead means constantly evolving.”Loris Degioanni, creator of Falco and Sysdig Founder and CTO, emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative. “The future of security is built on open source. Threat actors are working together – sharing tactics, scripts, and now AI techniques. Instead of fighting an asymmetrical battle, security professionals must do the same. Not only does the Sysdig Open Source Community create a space for them to collaborate and help shape the tools they use, but it delivers an open forum to share what they’re seeing on the front lines and form a stronger, more collective defense.”The open source security landscape is experiencing rapid evolution, driven by increasing complexity in cloud environments and a new generation of professionals entering the field. The Sysdig Open Source Community provides a dedicated home for user collaboration across:Wireshark: The network protocol analyzer, launched in 1998, with over 160 million downloads in the last decade.sysdig OSS: Introduced in 2014, foundational for open source system visibility, cloud-native forensics, and incident response.Falco: The open source standard for threat detection and a CNCF-graduated project, launched in 2016 and currently used by 60% of Fortune 500 companies.Stratoshark: An open source cloud forensics tool described as “Wireshark for the cloud,” launched in early 2025 and downloaded over 40,000 times since its release. In addition to its established user base, the community will be supported by project maintainers, Sysdig threat researchers, engineers, and support professionals. While various channels for user questions exist, the Sysdig Open Source Community aims to consolidate these conversations, fostering deeper collaboration, knowledge sharing, and a stronger sense of connection.Community members will have the ability to:Collaborate in dedicated forums for users of all four technologies, establishing an easily searchable record of resources, questions, answers, and best practices.Engage in certification programs designed to validate security skills.Browse job and freelance boards connecting them with career opportunities.Participate in mentorship pairing programs supporting both new and experienced professionals.Access a student support center offering resources for new technologists entering the industry or assistance with specific problems and projects.Gerald Combs, creator of Wireshark and Sysdig Director of Open Source Projects, stated, “Open source isn’t just about lines of code. It’s about people, and it’s about raising the security standard. There are people who have used tools like Wireshark and Falco throughout their career, and this community gives them a place to learn, innovate, and raise the bar. From helping longtime Wireshark users transfer their expertise directly into the cloud, to helping new users learn the basics of OSS security, there is something for everyone in the Sysdig Open Source Community.”Registration for the Sysdig Open Source Community opened on July 10, 2025, with the forum grand opening scheduled for July 28, 2025. Early registrants will be eligible for four giveaways between July 15 and July 25, 2025, including prizes such as paid tuition for certification courses and event registration fees. Community members will also receive early access to exclusive sessions and priority notifications regarding upcoming events, such as an August online community launch event featuring Loris Degioanni, Gerald Combs, and Craig McLuckie, co-founder of Kubernetes.Sysdig provides real-time cloud security solutions, designed to stop cloud attacks rapidly and detect changes in risk with real-time insights powered by open source Falco.
