RESTON, Va. – Regula, a developer of identity verification (IDV) solutions and forensic devices, has launched “The Road to Digital ID,” an online resource center. This knowledge hub is designed to offer a structured guide to digital identity, covering its verification methods, associated risks, and the opportunities it presents.
Governments and businesses globally are increasingly adopting digital identity frameworks. For example, the UK government recently introduced a mandatory digital ID scheme for Right to Work checks. This initiative, while framed as modernization, has prompted discussions regarding privacy, trust, and governance.
A study by Forrester Consulting, commissioned by Regula, indicates that nearly half of global organizations are prepared to adopt digital IDs, yet these are not expected to fully replace physical documents. Hesitation often stems from concerns about infrastructure readiness, data protection and privacy risks, and reliance on third-party technologies. “The Road to Digital ID” aims to clarify these complexities by consolidating Regula’s research, use cases, and educational content into a coherent overview. The hub addresses definitions, trust frameworks, architecture, and verification mechanisms such as biometrics, document checks, liveness detection, and cryptographic proofs. It also outlines opportunities like streamlined onboarding and fraud reduction, alongside risks including privacy breaches, data leakage, and potential exclusion, and proposes best practices like choice, auditability, and decentralization.
The resource center provides practical insights into digital identity implementation. It includes an overview of major global initiatives, such as the EU Digital Identity Wallet, illustrating diverse governmental approaches to secure and user-centric identification. Visitors can also access key findings from Regula’s study, “The New Imperative: Digital IDs,” which examines how businesses perceive and prepare for digital identity adoption. Additionally, the hub features a detailed look at countries that have either implemented or are piloting digital ID systems, highlighting their experiences and lessons learned.
Henry Patishman, Executive Vice President of Identity Verification Solutions at Regula, stated, “Our new knowledge hub aims to inform policymakers, technologists, practitioners, and end-users. Digital identity offers significant potential to simplify access to services and enhance security, but this potential is realized only when systems are built on transparency, interoperability, and trust. With The Road to Digital ID, we seek to provide a balanced perspective on both opportunities and pitfalls by showcasing effective strategies and outlining how to design trustworthy systems.”
