Technology entrepreneur Bill Douglas and systems architect Drew Hall have co-authored a new book, “Peak Property Performance: Game-Changing AI and Digital Strategies for Commercial Real Estate” (Fast Company Press, June 24, 2025, $26.95), offering a framework for commercial real estate (CRE) leaders to manage digital infrastructure and unlock asset value.
The book addresses challenges faced by CRE owners, such as fragmented systems, vendor lock-in, and rising operational expenses, proposing strategies to prepare for an AI-powered future. Douglas and Hall introduce their proprietary 5C™ Framework, a five-step roadmap designed to transform properties into data-powered, AI-ready assets. The framework includes: Clarify (auditing digital assets and data sources), Connect (unifying fragmented systems), Collect (aligning people, data, and tools), Coordinate (ensuring real-time systems coordination and AI application), and Control (acting on insights for net operating income and competitive advantage).
Drawing from their experience with office, multifamily, and mixed-use portfolios, the authors state that many portfolios lose value due to fragmented systems and unutilized data. The book aims to show how to regain control over this data, safely and profitably. “Data ownership is the new location,” states Douglas, who is the CEO of OpticWise. “And if you’re not monetizing your building’s data and digital infrastructure, someone else is.” Drew Hall is the founder and CTO at OpticWise, a technology company specializing in business transformation through digital architecture.
Industry leaders have endorsed the book. Thomas Noonan, lead director at Intercontinental Exchange (NYSE: ICE), commented, “Control of data and digital directly impacts NOI—creating immediate returns and competitive advantages. Bill’s insights aren’t theoretical—they’re a strategic blueprint.” Chad J. Stafford, president of Occidental Management, Inc., described it as “a masterclass in creating value through data and digital infrastructure.” Real estate developer Vinny English added, “Finally, a blueprint that speaks to builders and developers about digital infrastructure without the tech jargon.”
