NationsBenefits Integrates Basket Adjudication Service with Heritage Grocers Group for Supplemental Benefits Access

NationsBenefits, a provider of supplemental benefits and healthcare fintech solutions, has integrated its real-time Basket Adjudication Service (BAS) technology with Heritage Grocers Group. This integration enables health plan members to use their NationsBenefits Benefits Mastercard Prepaid Card for eligible purchases at Heritage banners, including Cardenas Markets, El Rancho Supermercado, Tony’s Fresh Market, and Los Altos Ranch Markets, to acquire fresh produce, pantry staples, and over-the-counter wellness essentials. Michael Parker, Co-CEO of NationsBenefits, stated that this integration expands their retail network, allowing families to redeem supplemental benefits on locally sourced foods and essential wellness products.

NationsBenefits’ fintech platform is embedded directly into checkout systems, providing members with the flexibility to use their supplemental benefits seamlessly. The BAS technology validates benefit eligibility immediately at each checkout for items such as whole grains, fresh eggs, vitamins, or over-the-counter medications. This process aims to eliminate uncertainty regarding coverage. Individuals gain confidence in making health-conscious choices, while health plans access anonymous, ZIP-code–level purchase insights to understand local needs and preferences. This data can inform the refinement of benefit designs, ensuring alignment with member behaviors and nutritional requirements. Furthermore, plans can deploy targeted preventive-care outreach campaigns, such as tailored educational content or mobile clinic pop-ups in underserved areas.

Connecting transaction patterns into personalized rewards and incentive programs is intended to boost member engagement, reinforce adherence to care, and reduce avoidable health situations, including hospitalizations. Adam Salgado, President & Executive Director of HGG Foundation, affirmed Heritage Grocers Group’s commitment to community health and wellness, noting that the partnership with NationsBenefits extends their mission by integrating health-focused benefits directly into their stores. Studies and programs focused on community-based medically tailored meals and food-as-medicine have demonstrated potential reductions in hospitalizations by up to 49%, overall healthcare costs by 16%, and A1C levels by 1.5. By implementing these interventions within the Heritage Grocer Group’s network, NationsBenefits aims to expand access to essential nutrition and contribute to tangible health improvements. This collaboration is presented as an effort to leverage technology and local partnerships to address care gaps, promote preventive health, and foster healthier communities.
