MITRE Introduces AADAPT Cybersecurity Framework to Bolster Digital Asset Security

MITRE, a not-for-profit research and development organization, has unveiled AADAPT™ (Adversarial Actions in Digital Asset Payment Technologies), a new cybersecurity framework designed to identify, analyze, and mitigate vulnerabilities within digital financial systems, including cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, and non-fungible tokens.Emulating the structure of the established MITRE ATT&CK® framework, AADAPT offers developers, policymakers, and financial organizations a structured methodology. This framework aims to identify, analyze, and mitigate potential risks associated with digital asset payments. It incorporates insights from over 150 real-world attack sources across government, industry, and academia, categorizing adversarial tactics, techniques, and procedures specific to digital asset payment technologies, such as those involving consensus algorithms and smart contracts. The increasing reliance on digital payment assets, including cryptocurrencies, has led to a rise in sophisticated cyber threats. These threats encompass double-spending attacks, phishing schemes, and ransomware incidents, affecting businesses, governments, and individual users. Wen Masters, vice president of cyber technologies at MITRE, stated, “Digital payment assets like cryptocurrency are set to transform the future of global finance, but their security challenges cannot be ignored. With AADAPT, MITRE is empowering stakeholders to adopt robust security measures that not only safeguard their assets but also build trust across the ecosystem.”Smaller organizations, local governments, and municipalities are particularly susceptible to these cyber threats, often lacking the necessary resources to bolster their cybersecurity defenses. AADAPT seeks to address these disparities by providing practical guidance and tools tailored to the specific needs of this financial market segment. MITRE, through its public-private partnerships and mission-driven innovation, aims to advance cybersecurity measures to address national and global challenges, having previously advised federal agencies and U.S. policymakers on evolving digital asset technologies.Further information on the AADAPT framework is available on the official website at https://aadapt.mitre.org. Inquiries can also be directed to aadapt@mitre.org, and a webinar hosted by the Linux Foundation provides additional context.
