KX, a global provider of real-time, time-series, and AI-driven analytics, has released KDB-X Community Edition, a complimentary version of its high-performance unified data and analytics engine, KDB-X, designed to provide developers with an accessible foundation for creating time-aware AI applications.
KDB-X Community Edition, co-built with developers and engineered for modern lakehouse architectures, offers an open, modular framework equipped with advanced libraries specifically for high-volume time-series and market data analysis. The edition aims to democratize access to sophisticated data infrastructure through intuitive interfaces and streamlined installation, enabling developers to leverage KX’s core technology.
Michael Gilfix, Chief Product and Engineering Officer at KX, stated, “We didn’t just build KDB-X for developers; we built it with them. KDB-X was shaped by some of the smartest data engineers and quants from leading capital markets firms with the goal of delivering the most powerful and accessible programmable data infrastructure for modern, distributed systems.” He added that the Community Edition allows developers to experience the same real-time performance previously delivered to the world’s most demanding systems.
KDB-X provides a unified environment for managing streaming, batch, and historical data, supporting Python, SQL, and q within a single platform. Built upon the kdb+ foundation, it ensures ultra-low latency and scalability for real-time analytics. Its AI-ready vector search capabilities facilitate unified insights across both structured and unstructured data. Developers benefit from backward compatibility, modular extensibility, and flexible deployment options across cloud or on-premise environments.
The underlying technology, kdb+ 4.1, recently set a new industry record in the STAC-M3™ benchmark for time-series analytics. Tested on Supermicro servers with Micron memory and Intel processors, it achieved unprecedented performance across 19 of 24 STAC-M3 Kanaga mean-response-time benchmarks, demonstrating up to 2.7 times faster throughput compared to competing architectures.
Since its public preview, KDB-X Community Edition has garnered rapid adoption within the developer community, indicating a strong demand for high-performance, accessible analytics tools. It has already been applied in developing trade execution strategies, real-time asset monitoring systems, and predictive maintenance platforms. Alexander Unterrainer, a KXpert and founder of DefconQ, commented on his involvement, stating, “It has been great getting involved in the development of KDB-X as it gave me the opportunity to see what is being worked on, add ideas and suggestions and have the chance to potentially shape the product.”KX is committed to expanding the KDB-X ecosystem through regular feature drops. These include a modular framework for code organization and reuse, enhanced AI and vector libraries for similarity search, integration with KX Dashboards for real-time visualization, and upcoming GPU acceleration. Future plans also encompass agentic and natural-language interfaces to enable AI agents to interact with KDB-X for autonomous, time-aware reasoning. The KDB-X Community Edition is available immediately and at no cost, offering continuous feature updates. General commercial availability for KDB-X is scheduled for early 2026.
Developers can access KDB-X Community Edition and associated resources, including tutorials, documentation, community engagement platforms, and courses through the KX Academy, via the KX Developer Center.
