IPinfo Launches Residential Proxy Detection to Combat Sophisticated Fraud and Account Takeovers

IPinfo, an internet data provider, has introduced its Residential Proxy Detection API, expanding its privacy detection capabilities to assist security and fraud prevention teams in identifying and mitigating highly evasive anonymized IP traffic. The new detection is also available via downloadable database and Snowflake integration.

Residential proxy networks have emerged as a significant vector for fraudulent activities, including account takeovers and large-scale abuse. Unlike VPNs or datacenter proxies, these networks route traffic through legitimate residential IP addresses, frequently without the knowledge of the IP owner due to malware or deceptive installations. Their ability to mimic genuine user activity allows them to bypass conventional IP-based detection methods, blending into legitimate traffic patterns.

“Residential Proxy Detection is a direct response to the operational needs of security and anti-fraud teams, especially those at the enterprise level who face increasingly complex and high-volume abuse scenarios,” stated Ben Dowling, CEO of IPinfo. “Residential proxies are a preferred tactic of sophisticated attackers. The data we provide gives companies deeper insight into cloaked threats and the IP infrastructure behind them.”

IPinfo’s solution is designed for enterprise fraud, risk, and security teams. It enriches each IP with details such as the residential proxy provider name, last-seen timestamp, a persistence score, and a mobile flag, offering crucial context for risk assessment. Key capabilities include pinpointing residential proxy sources, enabling the blocking of abusive networks or adjusting fraud-risk scores; assessing risk in context through ‘last seen’ and ‘percent days seen’ fields for fine-tuning rules; rapidly identifying new and rotated addresses due to daily dataset verification; and closing the mobile blind spot by tagging IPs exiting through carrier gateways, improving detection of short-lived fraud and scraping. The solution aims to strengthen:

Fraud detection: Spotting cloaked transactions and synthetic identities that rotate through residential proxies to simulate legitimate users.
Threat intelligence: Enriching security event data with proxy metadata to support Security Operations Center (SOC) investigations.
Risk scoring: Providing a weighted input in authentication and authorization models.
Abuse mitigation: For reviewing manipulation and credential stuffing attacks that exploit residential proxies.

Residential Proxy Detection is available as a standalone product and also enhances IPinfo’s existing Privacy Detection data, which already identifies VPNs, relays, hosting providers, and Tor nodes. It integrates via API, downloadable database, and Snowflake, allowing for seamless incorporation into real-time or batch workflows with minimal engineering effort.

IPinfo is recognized for providing accurate IP data globally, delivering contextual metadata on each IP address, ranging from geolocation and mobile carrier information to privacy detection and proxy identification. The company serves over 500,000 users, including developers and Fortune 500 enterprises, helping them make informed decisions, manage security risks, comply with regulations, and enhance customer experiences. IPinfo’s API processes more than one billion requests daily, with data also accessible via direct download and major cloud platforms, supported by a team dedicated to data precision.

The Residential Proxy Detection API is currently available. Further details, data samples, and integration options are accessible at www.ipinfo.io/resproxy.
