Gradient Unveils Nexus Platform for Scalable Management of Multifamily Heat Pump Fleets

Gradient, a developer of smart heating and cooling technologies, has launched Gradient Nexus, a new hardware-native control and intelligence platform designed to manage fleets of its All-Weather 120V window heat pumps at scale for multifamily housing owners and operators.

The Gradient Nexus platform aims to transform distributed electrified units into a coordinated, software-defined system, offering multifamily housing owners and operators enhanced visibility and control over heating and cooling operations across their properties. This development addresses a stated need from building owners to manage electrification costs and operations effectively.

Vince Romanin, Founder and CTO of Gradient, commented on the platform’s introduction, stating, “Building owners have been asking for exactly this. They’re ready to electrify, but they need confidence that they can manage costs and operations at scale. Nexus gives them that confidence. For the first time, building owners and operators can predict and control their heating and cooling spend rather than just react to it.”

During beta testing, one customer reportedly achieved a 25% reduction in energy consumption through the deployment of Gradient Nexus and the remote optimization of setpoints across their building. The platform is currently in operation across more than 200 residence units in Boston, Detroit, and Washington, D.

Key capabilities of Gradient Nexus for multifamily owners and operators include comfort guardrails, which allow for the setting of heating and cooling boundaries aligned with operating budgets while tenants retain control within these limits. It also provides fleet-wide visibility through a single dashboard that consolidates temperature trends, runtime, alarms, and energy usage for every unit. Zone-level control enables the management of hundreds of units as a single coordinated system, allowing adjustments to modes and temperatures across floors or buildings from one interface. Additionally, power-aware operations dynamically manage total power draw across units, which is noted as critical for older buildings undertaking electrification without major electrical upgrades.

Gradient Nexus is deeply integrated with Gradient’s hardware, providing high-resolution telemetry and real-time unit-level control. This integration is intended to form the basis for future predictive maintenance and grid-interactive functionalities. The platform is currently available for multifamily housing operators.

Gradient specializes in sustainable heating and cooling solutions, with its All-Weather 120V Window Heat Pump designed for year-round performance, high efficiency, and simplified installation. The company’s operations are supported by venture funding and non-dilutive funding from entities including the U.
