GoFundMe Launches Giving Funds to Democratize Donor-Advised Philanthropy

GoFundMe, an online fundraising platform, has introduced Giving Funds, a new product designed to simplify and broaden access to charitable giving, leveraging the functionality of donor-advised funds (DAFs) for a wider audience.

Giving Funds aim to provide users with a centralized platform to plan, invest, grow, and track their charitable contributions, consolidating all aspects of giving onto a single annual tax receipt. This new tool is launched in partnership with GoFundMe Giving Fund, an independent 501(c)(3) public charity and DAF sponsor.

Traditional DAFs currently hold over $250 billion in donated funds, yet a substantial portion often remains undistributed annually. GoFundMe seeks to transform DAFs into a more active, everyday giving mechanism, intending to facilitate a greater and more immediate flow of funds to nonprofit organizations. The platform features no management fees, no minimum balances, and offers access to 1.4 million charities, empowering users to direct their giving.

Tim Cadogan, CEO of GoFundMe, stated, “Giving Funds expand GoFundMe into a full-service destination for generosity – empowering everyone to discover causes, support individuals and nonprofits, and find new ways to connect and give, all through a platform they know and trust.” He also noted, “Charitable giving has hovered around 2% of U.S. GDP for decades. We believe that with the right tools, we can help increase that.”

Any individual in the United States can open a Giving Fund account without charge and begin supporting causes with donations as low as $5. Giving Funds function as a personal charitable wallet, removing the financial and administrative barriers that have historically limited access to DAFs, which are currently utilized by less than 1% of Americans. Users can contribute to their Giving Fund, grant funds immediately to charity, or invest them for tax-free growth, donating when specific causes or moments arise.

With integrated discovery tools, curated recommendations, and sharing features, Giving Funds facilitate the identification and support of inspiring nonprofits. This includes the ability to easily find local charities and, during crises, identify trusted organizations providing urgent relief.

This launch represents a strategic move in GoFundMe’s commitment to expanding the charitable economy. Over the past year, GoFundMe has introduced tools such as Profiles, Live Fundraising, and a suite of AI-powered features, which have been used nearly 40 million times. In May, the company announced it had surpassed $40 billion raised globally and launched GoFundMe Pro, reflecting its increased focus on the nonprofit sector. Recently, GoFundMe was recognized on TIME’s list of the 100 Most Influential Companies of 2025 for its work in promoting charitable giving and community support. GoFundMe anticipates that expanding access to donor-advised funds through Giving Funds will unlock significant financial support for nonprofits and communities in need.

This week marks the initial rollout of Giving Funds, with additional features slated for release in the coming months.
