Fivetran Acquires Tobiko Data, Bolstering End-to-End Data Platform with Advanced Transformation Capabilities

Fivetran, the global leader in automated data movement, has acquired Tobiko Data, an open-source transformation company known for SQLMesh and SQLGlot, enhancing its platform to offer a fully managed, end-to-end solution for data movement, transformation, and activation, with the goal of delivering governed, AI-ready data at speed and scale.

Tobiko Data’s technology was designed for modern production-grade environments where efficiency, adaptability, and speed are crucial. Its intelligent transformation engine streamlines operations by eliminating unnecessary runs, allowing teams to test, validate, and deploy updates more rapidly while reducing compute costs. Built-in development environments and semantic SQL understanding further minimize overhead, enhance reliability, and provide significant time and cost savings.

George Fraser, CEO of Fivetran, commented on the acquisition, stating, “Our customers are under pressure to deliver trusted data faster, across more teams, and into more environments. With Tobiko Data, we’re expanding our transformation capabilities to meet that demand – and doing it with an open foundation that encourages transparency, innovation, and interoperability.”

Tyson Mao, co-founder of Tobiko Data, added, “We built Tobiko Data to make data transformation more collaborative, transparent, and predictable. By joining forces with Fivetran, we can scale these capabilities globally and help customers turn transformation into a strength.”

This acquisition marks Fivetran’s second this year, following its earlier acquisition of Census to expand into reverse ETL functionalities. Last year, Fivetran surpassed $300 million in annual recurring revenue. The company also expanded its Connector SDK to support developers in building high-quality production connectors and launched Hybrid Deployment to facilitate pipelines across private cloud and on-premises environments. Fivetran further enhanced its Managed Data Lake Service to support Amazon S3, Azure Data Lake Storage, Microsoft OneLake and Fabric, and Google Cloud Storage. This service integrates with all major data catalogs and supports open table formats like Iceberg, assisting enterprises in building governed, AI-ready data lakes at scale.

Fivetran, headquartered in Oakland, California, specializes in centralizing data from various sources into cloud destinations, including data lakes. The company is trusted by organizations such as OpenAI, LVMH, Pfizer, Verizon, and Spotify to modernize their data infrastructure, power analytics and AI, ensure compliance, and achieve transformative business outcomes.
