The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) has unveiled its new Crypto and Blockchain Education Program, an initiative aimed at providing its member firms and their employees with educational resources on crypto assets and blockchain technology. The program features self-paced e-learning courses and a distinct in-person applied learning course, offered in collaboration with Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business. The initial phase of the e-learning courses will be accessible through FINRA’s Financial Learning Experience (FLEX) platform starting in October. Topics covered in the foundational e-learning modules include crypto and blockchain terminology, blockchain operations and on-chain transactions, the evolution of blockchain technology, various types of crypto assets and related products, the broader crypto ecosystem and markets, key considerations for FINRA member firms interacting with crypto assets and blockchain technology, and common fraud schemes involving crypto asset exposure. Greg Ruppert, Executive Vice President of Member Supervision at FINRA, stated, “We are excited to offer a new Crypto and Blockchain Education Program to continue supporting our member firms as they navigate evolving products and technology. Through the Crypto Hub, FINRA has focused on understanding how crypto and blockchains may impact our member firms, reflecting an ongoing commitment to FINRA Forward by providing educational resources to help them navigate this innovative technology as we collectively build for the future.” As member firms increase their engagement with crypto assets and blockchains, this e-learning program is designed to enhance industry knowledge and equip compliance professionals to counter crypto-related fraud. The curriculum incorporates application-based activities, real-world scenarios, and self-assessment quizzes, addressing concepts from fundamental terminology to fraud typologies and business activity considerations. Further details on the Crypto and Blockchain Education Program are available on the FINRA Unscripted podcast and at finra.org/cryptoed.
