Berlin-based InsurTech startup Feather has launched a car insurance offering tailored for expats in Europe. The new product provides a fully online, English-language service designed to streamline the typically complex and bureaucratic process of acquiring car insurance, enabling customers to secure coverage in under three minutes.
Feather, which previously offered health, liability, and business insurance, focuses on serving the expat community. The company, backed by $6m in funding, is expanding its operations across Europe, including Spain and France, where it has appointed local leadership.
The car insurance product is currently available in Spain, France, and Germany. Feather developed this offering in collaboration with established insurers Allianz, Helvetia, and VHV. Customers receive instant proof of insurance and can manage their policies entirely online, aiming to eliminate paperwork and industry jargon.
This launch aligns with a growing demand for digital-first insurance solutions across Europe. The European motor insurance market is projected to reach €175.69bn in 2025 and is forecast to nearly double by 2034. Concurrently, the European digital insurance market, valued at $128bn in 2024, is anticipated to grow by 33.5% annually, reflecting consumer preferences for speed and accessibility.
Rob Schumacher, CEO and co-founder of Feather, commented on the new product, stating, “Buying car insurance has traditionally been one of the most painful and bureaucratic processes for expats moving to Europe. We built this product to remove that friction. In just three minutes, anyone can get reliable coverage in their own language, backed by trusted partners.”
Schumacher further emphasized the company’s expat-first approach: “The car insurance market is massive – and mandatory – but it hasn’t kept up with consumer expectations. People want speed, clarity, and transparency. That’s exactly what Feather delivers. We focus on a group that has been underserved for too long. Expats face complex systems, language barriers, and confusing local rules. Our digital-first platform solves those problems. Launching car insurance is the natural next step in our mission to reinvent insurance for the modern age. It expands our portfolio and strengthens our position as the go-to digital insurance provider for expats in Europe.”
