Datavant, a prominent data collaboration platform in healthcare, announced its agreement to acquire DigitalOwl, a company specializing in AI-driven medical data analysis, aiming to enhance health data accessibility and actionability for the legal and insurance industries.
Datavant will integrate DigitalOwl’s technology to transform medical record reviews, which currently delay case resolutions for legal clients and claim approvals for insurance members, while increasing operational costs. The company notes that these inefficiencies are often passed on to consumers.
The combined offering will feature an end-to-end data collaboration platform. This platform is designed to include managed retrieval, automated summaries, chronology and de-duplication, and AI-enabled predictive analytics, securely delivering curated information to authorized users.
Kyle Armbrester, CEO of Datavant, stated, “Legal and insurance customers are looking to consolidate and simplify the process of finding, accessing and analyzing specific medical information from a vast amount of both structured and unstructured data sources.” He added that DigitalOwl’s data extraction and summarization technology, combined with Ontellus’ and Datavant’s digital record exchange platform and provider network, is positioned to transform the market.
DigitalOwl’s proprietary data extraction and AI technology classifies and annotates unstructured medical data, streamlining the review process and providing actionable insights. This technology is continuously refined by an in-house team of data scientists and industry professionals with experience in insurance and legal processes. The company was recently recognized as the 2025 Natural Language Generation Platform of the Year for Medical Record Reviews.
Yuval Man, CEO of DigitalOwl, commented on the acquisition, noting, “Manually reviewing medical records and extracting the necessary information for underwriting, cases and claims work is time-consuming and costly.” He added that joining forces with Datavant will enable them to accelerate their mission of applying advanced technology to automate manual processes and address workflow pain points, delivering greater value to partners and customers.
