Humana Inc. has announced the broad activation of Epic’s Coverage Finder and Digital Insurance Card Exchange capabilities for its Medicare Advantage members, aiming to streamline patient check-ins and advance digital-first healthcare.

For more than 800,000 Humana Medicare Advantage members receiving care at approximately 120 health systems, these new capabilities are designed to simplify the check-in process. The system allows for automatic confirmation of coverage in advance, removing the need for physical insurance cards or extensive paperwork at the point of care.

Dr. Imran A. Andrabi, President and CEO of Froedtert ThedaCare, commented on the activation, stating, “These capabilities help us meet patients where they are – by simplifying check-in, ensuring accurate information, and making their experience smoother. It’s an improvement that helps patients feel supported the moment they walk in, which directly aligns with our vision of being their trusted partner in health.”

This activation follows Humana and Epic’s joint commitment to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Health Technology Ecosystem, a White House-backed initiative focused on modernizing healthcare processes and establishing a patient-centric system. Humana and Epic were among the initial 60 organizations to join this initiative, which now includes approximately 400 organizations nationwide.

Both companies recently demonstrated these capabilities at the CMS Connectathon in Washington, D.

C., illustrating how direct connections between payers and providers can reduce administrative workloads for healthcare staff and enhance the patient experience.

The activated features are components of Epic’s Payer Platform, which facilitates the secure and automatic sharing of Humana members’ insurance details, including coverage information and digital insurance cards, with healthcare providers utilizing Epic. This integration is designed to eliminate manual data entry, reduce administrative burdens, and improve data accuracy during patient registration.

George Renaudin, President of Insurance at Humana, stated, “We’re proud to be among the first to bring these capabilities to life and demonstrate them directly to CMS. This is more than a technology launch – it’s a step toward a more connected, efficient healthcare system that puts people first.” Humana is actively encouraging its provider-partners who use Epic to enable these functionalities for their patients.

Alan Hutchison, Vice President at Epic, noted the impact of the features: “With Coverage Finder and Digital Insurance Card Exchange, more than a million patients have experienced easier check-ins. From reducing time at the front desk by up to 50% to ensuring their coverage is accurate and up to date, this makes insurance information one less thing patients need to worry about.”

Key benefits of the Coverage Finder and Digital Insurance Card Exchange capabilities include automated insurance verification, where coverage details are accessible to providers before patient arrival; streamlined check-in, removing the need for physical insurance cards; reduced errors and delays through automated data entry; and secure, compliant data exchange using national interoperability standards that align with CMS’s vision for modernized healthcare infrastructure.

This broad activation complements a MyChart integration announced in July, which allowed Humana Medicare Advantage members to access health plan information directly within their MyChart accounts. These advancements collectively underscore Humana and Epic’s commitment to enhancing transparency, convenience, and interoperability within the healthcare sector.
