Independent Sponsor News Launches as Dedicated Data and Media Platform for U.S. Independent Sponsor Ecosystem

Independent Sponsor News (ISN) has officially launched as a new media and data platform designed exclusively for the U.

S. Independent Sponsor ecosystem, aiming to address a long-standing gap in centralized, real-time market intelligence for active investors in American small and mid-sized businesses.

The Independent Sponsor segment has experienced significant growth, transforming from a niche “fundless sponsor” model into a substantial component of lower-to-middle market private equity and the broader private markets. Data from Axial indicates that Independent Sponsors now account for approximately 27% of all closed deals on its platform, representing the largest share among buyer categories. Further highlighting this expansion, Houlihan Lokey data shows the global direct equity market has grown at a compound annual growth rate of 52.8% since 2019, while Citrin Cooperman’s 2025 Independent Sponsor Report revealed that 74% of Independent Sponsors anticipate increased competition in the sector by 2026.

Despite this growth and economic importance, the Independent Sponsor ecosystem has historically lacked consistent, real-time data concerning deal flow, capital formation, LP trends, and sector development. Existing resources, such as annual industry conferences like McGuireWoods’, offer only periodic market snapshots, insufficient for a rapidly evolving market. ISN aims to bridge this information gap by providing a purpose-built platform that connects media and data, catering to how Independent Sponsors source deals, capital, and advisors.

ISN was conceived by Access Holdings, an alternative asset manager based in New York and Baltimore with extensive experience in the Independent Sponsor model. Sam Tidswell-Norrish, who joined Access Holdings as a Partner in 2025 after a decade with private equity firm Motive Partners, chairs ISN. Tidswell-Norrish also held an operational leadership role as EVP & CMO at Dun & Bradstreet and has been involved in the formation of several niche media platforms.

Sam Tidswell-Norrish commented on the market’s need: “The Independent Sponsor market is increasingly sophisticated and operationally intensive, but information asymmetry is acute. As this stakeholder group grows and contributes to significant deal volume, we want to bring news, data and institutional-grade partners to support the industry in its evolution, delivering the media and intelligence platform this ecosystem cannot operate without.”

The platform operates as a standalone, self-funded business, maintaining editorial and financial independence from its strategic partners. These selective partners include Access Holdings (investment partner), BluWave (value creation partner), and Capitala Group (investment partner). The ISN Advisory Board comprises Ed Stubbings (Founder of the Global Emerging Manager Institute), Kevin McAllister (Founder & Managing Partner of Access Holdings), Mark Kollar (Partner at Prosek Partners), and Maxwell Greenstein (Founder & CEO of GP Stakes News).

Mark Kollar noted the increasing demand for specialized platforms: “The evolution of niche asset classes and market segments are increasingly creating the need for highly specialized data and media platforms to help ensure that the proper depth and breadth of coverage exists to move the Independent Sponsor sector forward. I am delighted to be a part of ISN’s advisory committee and launch and look forward to helping support its growth.”

Kevin McAllister shared his perspective on the platform’s value: “Before we raised an institutional fund, we navigated the Independent Sponsor journey without a map. There was no consistent source of data, research, or insight, and no network you could easily connect with. We built Access despite that environment, and we saw firsthand how much harder that process was than it needed to be. ISN is the resource I wish we had then.”

ISN launched this week with its website, newsletter, and LinkedIn presence. Near-term plans include coverage of deal and capital-raising activities, original proprietary research, and broader ecosystem intelligence. The platform’s roadmap extends to developing a real-time market intelligence layer and a research marketplace, alongside a planned annual recognition program to acknowledge the contributions of Independent Sponsors to North American business and economic growth. The initiative aims to foster a more informed Independent Sponsor market, facilitating efficient capital allocation and generating durable, employment-creating growth in the lower and middle market.
